AMERICAN/ENGLISH SILK AND WATERCOLOR EMBROIDERED PICTURE OF HECTOR AND ANDROMACHE, WROUGHT BY HARRIET PECK first quarter 19th Century, oval design with silk and silk chenille threads on a silk ground with watercolor and ink embellishments, depicting classic Homeric hero Hector saying farewell to his wife, Andromache, and son, Astyanaz (held by a servant) as he leaves again for Troy; she is unsuccessfully pleading with him that all her other relatives have been killed by the Greeks and he is all to her; the scene probably taken from a contemporary mezzotint of the time, stitches include bullion knot, long and short, chenille, with hand sewn gilt metal thread embroidered border decorated with metal spangles (sequins) within a gilt and églomisé glazed panel inscribed "Harriet Peck" painted on edge, period gilt frame, label on back reads "Jos. & Jno. Vecchio/Looking Glass & Printo Store/Wholesale and Retail/No. 136 Broadway, New York..."sight size is h: 14.25 x w: 17 in.; including frame is h: 21.5 x w: 24.25 x d: 2 in.
