Jean Chevolleau was born in La Roche-sur Yon (southwest France) and spent his youth in Fontenay-le-comte in the Vendee area. He eventually moved to Paris to study at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts. He is primarily known as a painter of brightly colored geometric works featuring themes of marshes, coastlines, harbors, nudes, horses, etc. He was associated with the movement called the "Groupe de Puteaux" which was based on the rediscovery of Fauvism and Cubism with an emphasis on synthesizing the two. In addition to paintings, he also produced stained glass windows for four churches in France, as well as three tapestry cartoons for the Manufacture Saint Jean Aubusson.
