18K GOLD-MOUNTED CHINESE BLANC-DE-CHINE AND FRENCH PORCELAIN NECESSAIRE WITH JAPANESE LACQUER TRAY, MID-18TH CENTURY
the tulip veneered and kingwood fitted traveling case with oak secondary woods, the interior lined in red velvet fitted for porcelain teawares with high-relief flowering prunus branches, several pieces Dehua, the saucers and possibly the sugar bowl cover attributed to Saint-Cloud porcelain, circa 1730-50, with a Chinese globular teapot and cover (later and possibly English) with chain attachment, and two Chinese blanc-de-chine beakers, en suite with a gold-mounted rock crystal flask with gold stopper and chain, a gold tea caddy and cover and two small spoons, all porcelain pieces with various French gold marks, including a fleur-de-lis mark; the lower drawer containing a Japanese mid-18th Century rectangular lacquer tray, w: 10 1/4 in., decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e and takamki-e with mountain and river landscape, pine issuing from rocks next to a pavilion vermillion ground with tapered edge, the reverse in nashiji and a key (12)

  • Condition:
  • Porcelain pieces with glaze and firing flaws, glaze grit, pieces likely have been altered when gold mounts were attached
    Teapot cracked around body with restoration now yellowing and flaking, the later lid (possibly English) browned with crazing, chip to flange, and a small crack, underside of lid discolored, interior of pot cracks can be seen, interior restored with heavy spraying; Covered sugar lid cracked and heavy crazing around edges at gold mount;
    Beakers: One with light abrasions to interior rim
    Saucers: One with burst glaze bubble in foot rim, saucers are not a matched pair, one is slightly smaller and more thickly potted than the other;
    Glass bottle cracked and re-glued;
    Box: locks early, possibly original; areas of loss to lifting to veneer, cracks, loss to veneer right side of lid, and loss to right side bottom drawer; wear to felt from age, corner where lid felt has lifted
    Lacquer Tray: Ring mark, likely from when something hot was placed onto surface, surface scratches, wear and light flaking to edges
