Charles Henry Niehaus was born in 1855 to German parents in Cincinnati, OH. He studied at the McMicken School of Design and later at the Royal Academy of Munich. He received numerous public commissions during his career and is known for having the largest number of statues in the National Statuary Hall of the U.S. Capitol of any artist . (There were formerly 8 statues, currently there are 6 still on view after two were replaced).
The present bronze is a reduction of his John Paul Jones Memorial Monument which can be seen in West Potomac Park in Washington D.C. John Paul Jones was the first well-known naval hero of the American Revolution and is often referred to as the “Father of the U.S. Navy.” He led a very interesting and colorful life which has been well documented - h:18.75 in.
