Catalogue note:
Dermod O'Brien was born in County Limerick in 1865. He chose to study art in Paris, Antwerp and London. In 1889, under Siberdt and Verlat in Antwerp, he won the fourth prize for life drawing and in 1890 first prize. He moved to London in 1893, continued his art studies and shared a studio in Chelsea with Henry Tonks. In 1901 O'Brien moved back to Dublin and was elected full member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1907.
