EIGHT CAMEO GEMS IN THE MANNER OF JAMES TASSIE seven are unsigned and mounted on board by a previous collector; the eighth of a horse and lion after George Stubbs' 1770 "A Horse Frightened by a Lion" is indistinctly signed with a signature that does not appear to be Tassie, or his contemporary Charles Brown, who was known to make a cameo of this subject. The medallions are a mixture of plaster and paste and include subjects such as Demosthenes, Gilles Menage, Vespasian, and a griffin with a snake. Varying sizes, largest - h: 3 in. x w: 3 1/2 in.

Provenance: Part of a medallion collection that descended in the family of a British Tassie collector.
Montgomery Family, United Kingdom from at least the mid 19th century, to the present owner.
