ERICH HECKEL

ZWEI MANNER AM TISCH - TWO MEN AT A TABLE, 1913
Woodcut
Lower right signed and dated: Erich Heckel 13; lower left collectors mark (Herbert Marx Meyer, 1903-1988)

Catalogue note
The present work is related to an oil on canvas of the same name in the collection of the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (inv. no. HK-2948). According to the artist's own account, the work depicts a scene of two men arguing over a woman from Dostoyevsky's novel 'The Idiot.' Heckel has appropriated the novel's scene by inserting himself and his fellow artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, both founding members of the Die Brücke group. By 1912/1913, Die Brücke was fracturing over differences of opinion and the tension suggested in the composition of Zwei Männer is manifest in the copy of Kirchner's 'Die Brücke' manifesto laying on the table next to a knife and the inclusion of the body of Christ in the background, a symbol of The Passion, taken from Matthias Grünewald's Isenheim Altarpiece, a medieval German artist whom the two men admired.
