FRANCIS SCOTT KEY SLAVE LETTER TO J[AMES] P. STABLER The letter, dated January 24, 1825, written to a Mr. J[ames] P. Stabler of Sandy Spring, Maryland; the letter appears to relate to a case involving the ownership of a slave girl and a certain gentleman's claims to her. Key was a lawyer and district attorney for the District of Columbia. The Stabler of this letter was probably the nephew of Edward Stabler, the apothecary of Alexandria, VA. James Stabler was the third son of Dr. William and Deborah Pleasants Stabler. Dr. Stabler practiced in Sandy Spring from 1793 to 1806. James Stabler served as the Postmaster for Sandy Spring beginning in 1816, and opened a general store there in 1819.
