GLENNA GOODACRE (AMERICAN, 1939-2020), BRONZE FIGURE OF NATIVE AMERICAN CHILD WITH PIPE "SACRED SONG"
Signed 'G. Goodacre 21/50 (copyright) 2006 W'

Note:
Born in 1931 in West Texas, Glenna Goodacre studied fine art at Colorado College, initially focusing on oil painting. It wasn't until 1969, once she had become a wife and mother, that Goodacre began to experiment with sculpting figures out of wax and clay. "I just felt more comfortable with the medium, and I didn't have to worry about flesh tones anymore," Goodacre said in an interview with Southwest Art in 2009. "I started using gray or brown clay to come up with what I wanted to say, and from the beginning it worked well for me." In 1989, Goodacre debuted her first public outdoor sculpture, The Puddle Jumpers, at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts in Montgomery, Alabama. This opened the door for more high-profile commissions, most notably from the federal government. Goodacre's most well known works include the Vietnam Women's War Memorial at the National Mall (1993), the obverse of the Sacagawea dollar coin (introduced in 2000) and the Irish Memorial at Penn's Landing, Philadelphia (2003). Goodacre passed away in 2020.
