Description:

LETTER APPROVING CLARK MILL'S STATUE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON FROM JANE WASHINGTON TO SON, JOHN A. WASHINGTON III manuscript letter written by Jane Charlotte Blackburn Washington (1786-1855) to son, John Augustine Washington III (1821-1861), on single sheet of folded paper with "Bath" impress, dated "Jan. 30th 1853 Blakeley." Jane expresses her concern over an accident suffered by John's wife, "Nelly" or Eleanor, and asks her granddaughter Louisa to write about her trip to the District and visit with Mr. [Washington] Irving. She thanks her son about the account of "Mill's splendid sculpture" adding "I hope Mr. Mills will be the artist employed for the statue." Mills (1810-1883) was an American sculptor whose popular equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson led to a commission from Congress for a mounted work depicting Gen. George Washington during the Revolutionary War, now located in Stanton Park in Washington, D.C.
