MANUSCRIPT LETTER TO JOHN A. WASHINGTON III OF MT. VERNON FROM BETSY C. MASON OF HUNTLEY CONCERNING TRIAL OF SLAVES four page manuscript letter consisting of large single sheet folded, n.d., addressed "To John A. Washington Esq. of Mt. Vernon" and signed "most truly and respectfully yours/ BC Mason." Address leaf addressed to John Augustine Washington of Mount Vernon/ Mr. Gaines with remnants of black wax seal attached. Huntley was built as a country residence between 1825-1830 by George Mason's grandson, Thomson Mason (1785-1838), and descended at his death to his wife, Elizabeth "Betsey" Clapham Price (1802-1873) of Leesburg, Virginia. In the letter, Huntley's owner expresses alarm over the upcoming trial of "my negroes" for "certain offences" committed during the recent Christmas holidays: "an unfriendly & uncalled for act in the constable & his Posse to seize upon my negroes." Mason's overseer, Mr. Gaines, delivered the letter to Washington
