Description:

PLASTER MAQUETTE GARGOYLE OF A DENTIST EXAMINING A WALRUS, FROM THE WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL, AMERICAN, 20TH CENTURY this was the model for the gargoyle that was carved for the National Cathedral by Constantine Seferlis. According to M. Hunt's The Stone Carvers, "one day a dentist came over and said he would like to have a memorial to his profession. He said 'I'd like to make a tooth with a cavity.' So we thought that a tooth with a cavity didn't make much sense, so we told the man to come back... So when he came back, he found a dentist working on a walrus, fixing the cavities of the big teeth of the walrus!". (see pg. 159 of The Stone Carvers for the story behind the maquette) - h:15.75 in.
