SIGNED PAMPHLET INVITATION FOR WASHINGTON BENEVOLENT SOCIETY OF PHILADELPHIA, CIRCA 1825, TO COMMODORE JAMES BARRON pamphlet invitation, n.d., consisting of a single sheet of paper, folded, partially printed on front only, signed by "N.R." or "J.R. Hopkins/ Chairman" with "Comm. James Barron" signed below. Address leaf on back reads "Comm. James Barron/ U. States Navy." After years of mutual ill-will, Commodore James Barron (1768-1851) fought a duel with his U.S. Naval officer rival, Commodore Stephen Decatur (1779-1820), in 1820. Decatur died from his wounds; Barron recovered and commanded the Philadelphia Navy Yard from 1824-1825, the Gosport Naval Yard (now Norfolk Yard, VA) from 1825-31 and the Philadelphia Naval Yard again from 1831-1837. The Washington Benevolent Society of Philadelphia was founded in 1812 to commemorate the first U.S. president, holding birthnight balls and orations every February 22nd at various locations in the city, including Zion Lutheran Church
