Literature: Josiah Penfield (June 6, 1785 - September 12, 1828) was a 6th generation silversmith and merchant. He was also a jeweler, silversmith, civic leader, Baptist Deacon and philanthropist. He is best known as the benefactor of Mercer Institute (now Mercer University, Atlanta and Macon, GA). The village of Penfield, Georgia is named in his honor.
