Catalogue note:
In 1787 the Tournai factory received an order for an extensive service ‘in Buffon birds and gold' for Louis-Philippe-Joseph, Duc d'Orléans (1747-93). As the brother of Louis XIV and known for his extravagant lifestyle, the enormous order aptly comprised a total of 1,593 pieces. Destined for his residence the Palais-Royal, Paris, during the French Revolution and very shortly before his death in 1793, a large tranche of the service was delivered. During the tumultuous time following 1793, it is thought that much of the service was dispersed. After the Revolution, Robert Fogg, an English merchant, is recorded in two invoices dated 18 July 1803 and 9 October 1806, as intermediary for 594 pieces which were sold to the Prince of Wales (future George IV). Today 565 pieces, primarily from this source, survive in the Royal Collections at Windsor Castle.

The form ‘Triboulette' is recorded in the Tournai archive and corresponds to the Sèvres form ‘Gobelet Litron'. Like Sèvres, Tournai also produced this form in four sizes. For additional commentary and examples preserved in the collections of the Royal Museums of Art and History of Brussels, see by Claire Dumortier and Patrick Habets, Porcelaine de Tournai, Le service d'Orléans, Brussels, 2004, p. 74, fig. 2.64; and for those preserved at Windsor Castle, see Geoffrey de Bellaigue, Sèvres, Porcelain from the Royal Collection Exhibition Catalogue (London, 1979), pp. 25-27. Additional examples from the service can be found at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Tournai and the Royal Museum in Mariemont.
