Bound in red tooled leather with decorative gilt spines and covers, aeg. Both fore edge paintings reference Sir Robert Walpole. Vol. 49 shows Putney Bridge over the Thames, orig. Fulham Bridge, with a sailboat and white-painted houses. As Prime Minister in 1720 he reportedly vowed to build this bridge after frustrated attempts to cross by ferry. Vol. 50 depicts Walpole's Strawberry Hill House, a white Gothic Revival villa built circa 1749, notable for its castle-like battlements and towers (2)
