Description:

TWO SMALL PLASTER MAQUETTE FIGURES FROM THE WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL, AMERICAN, 20TH CENTURY depicting a "whistling stone carver," and "a dismayed dean of the Cathedral"; according to M. Hunt, the "pair of small termination molding carvings located on a flying buttress on the north side of the Cathedral's nave exemplify (a) playful storytelling in stone." Carved for the Cathedral by John Guarente, one figure depicts a stone carver on the scaffolding looking down and whistling at the girls. "The carving next to it shows the former dean of the Cathedral, Francis B. Sayre Jr., (watching the stone carver), with his hands thrown up in dismay and a look of shock on his face." (2)
