Description:

1863 GEORGE MASON LETTER TO UNION GENERAL-IN-CHIEF HALLECK REQUESTING MILITARY PROTECTION AGAINST SOUTHERN OCCUPIERS handwritten letter from George Mason, grandson of George Mason IV of Gunston Hall, to Union General-In-Chief Henry Halleck, dated Jan. 20, 1863, from Spring Bank, his home near Alexandria, Virginia. In a four-page folded letter written on two sides of one sheet, Mason describes his house as having been occupied on four occasions by Union soldiers without his permission. He noted a diseased man was camped adjacent, his stables were filled with Union soldier's horses, some of his outhouses torn down, and his garden, yard and orchard desolated and their enclosures nearly destroyed. Mason purchased Spring Bank in 1844, a 25-room mansion with a brick barn, stables and outbuildings
