Description:

1864 KENTUCKY CIVIL WAR MANUSCRIPT LETTER TO CAPT. PELL FROM J.J. HARRISON ON ABOLITION AND GUERILLA FORCES J.J. Harrison was an anti-slavery, pro-Union lawyer, judge and sometime politician who practiced in Hartford, Kentucky, a neighborhood in Fayette County in southeastern Lexington; four-page handwritten folded letter, addressed to "Capt. Pell, Dear friend," dated "Heartford [sic] Ky., July 14/64. Harrison writes eloquently about his political and social beliefs, the institution of slavery and the problems caused by "roving bands of Guerillas...taking all the money & goods they desired..." Guerilla wars were waged during the Civil War by both Confederate and Union forces and were characterized by ambushes, raids, looting, physical damage to farms and homes and murder. Of slavery Harrison wrote, "I am of the opinion that abolitionists never could have destroyed the institution of slavery But the rebellion has blotted it out forever" and in reference to the recruitment of slaves, "I never can be made to think negroes are any better than white men, every negro placed in the army will save that many white men." Letters by Harrison can be seen in the collection of the Kentucky Historical Society. Letter 12 1/4 x 7 1/5 in., unlined folded sheet, brown/black ink
