Bronze on black and white marble veined base
Signed: "A. FALGUIERE" on edge of bench and 57 stamped on reverse

The present bronze is a reduction of the monument to celebrated French novelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) located on Avenue de Friedland in Paris. The statue was commissioned by the Société des Gens de Lettres after they rejected Rodin's monument to Balzac which he had worked on for seven years. Falguiere's statue was completed after his death by his pupil Laurent Marqueste and was inaugurated in Paris in 1902.
