Catalogue note:
Marie Cuttoli (1879-1973) was a collector and patron of modern French Art. She is credited with reviving the art of tapestry weaving in the modern era. In 1923, she commissioned Jean Lurcat to create a design for the first modern tapestry. Following its success, in 1927 she began commissioning tapestry and carpet cartoons from many of the greatest artists of her time including Picasso, Braque, Leger and Miro. Picasso's willingness to collaborate with her encouraged the others to follow.

In 1949, Cuttoli was named an officer of the Legion of Honor.
