Description:

AFTER PAUL MANSHIP (AMERICAN, 1885-1966) SIGNED AND DATED 1994, BRONZE STUDIES FOR THE MALE AND FEMALE FIGURES OF THE PROMETHEUS FOUNTAIN, ROCKEFELLER CENTER
both signed 'P MANSHIP copyright JM 94' and stamped 'FONDERIA MARINELLI FIRENZE'

According to Paul Manship's son John Manship, in his book PAUL MANSHIP, 1989, p. 132, "the figures stood alongside stylized vegetation to symbolize the humanity that received the gift of fire."

An additional posthumous set of these two figures can be viewed at the The Smithsonian Museum of American Art. According to the Smithsonian Museum website, "they were small studies for Paul Manship's most famous sculpture, the Prometheus Fountain in Rockefeller Center. Prometheus, the creator of mankind, stole fire from Olympus and taught man how to use it. This angered Zeus, who sentenced Prometheus to be chained to a mountain where a vulture devoured his liver every day. Manship's (monumental) sculpture originally showed the colossal Prometheus handing the gift of fire to a man and woman. The entire group was installed in the central plaza of Rockefeller Center in 1934, but after a year, Manship felt that the male and female figures were "out of proportion" and they were removed. Fifty years later they were reinstated on the ground floor, in the courtyard adjacent to the central plaza."

The present bronze figures were cast by Manship's son John in Florence in 1994.
