Catalogue note:
Edward Copleston (1776–1849) was an English churchman and academic, Provost of Oriel College, Oxford, from 1814 until 1828; and Bishop of Llandaff from 1827. Thomas Phillips painted a larger example of this likeness of Edward Copleston in 1826 (55" x 44", now Oriel College, Oxford University); There is a mezzotint of this image that was published by James Wyatt in 1822 (NPG, London)
