Description:

AMERICAN 22-STAR FLAG, POSSIBLY A CIVIL WAR-ERA EXCLUSIONARY FLAG
EARLY AMERICAN FLAG WITH HAPHAZARD ARRANGEMENT OF STARS, PROBABLY 1837-1865

Constructed throughout of plain weave cotton with both hand and treadle stitching, with 22 visible stars that are double appliquéd and randomly placed. The left side of the flag is reduced, and remnants of three additional stars are visible.
Assuming the original number of stars was 25, this count would represent the state of Arkansas which was admitted to the Union in 1836. While early sewing machines were invented in the 1830's, the treadle machine was not widely available until around 1855, when it was mass produced. The configuration of the stripes is rare as it begins and ends on a white stripe (7 white and 6 red), which tends to be associated with earlier flags. In addition, the random arrangement of stars is also typical of flags made in the early to mid-19th century.
