AMERICAN LATE 18TH CENTURY MICA SHELL WORK SHADOW BOX OR TABLEAU WITH PAPER FIGURES IN ORIGINAL WOODEN CASE being a sloping wooden shadow box or case with a glass window showing a tableau vivant or scene comprising a miniature three-story Federal period home with an open window and porticoed door at left, a tall cross-shaped post or sundial at right and five paper doll figures, likely hand-colored, positioned in foreground. The two women wear polonaise era dresses with elaborately styled hair while the three men wear coats and breeches. In the rear is a group of four men who appear to be soldiers in red coats holding guns. The decorations are assembled from a variety of materials including small shells, stones, moss, colored beads, mica and mirrored pieces, wood, paint and paper and are attached to all surfaces including the ceiling. The exterior of the case is painted, with some separation visible along the rear wooden joins - h:10.35 w:17.25 d:8 in.
