AMERICAN MAHOGANY BONNET TOP FAN-CARVED CHEST ON CHEST, BOSTON, CIRCA 1770 in two parts, of rectangular form, the arched molded bonnet-form cornice mounted with spiral turned finials, the upper section with central carved shell flanked by short drawers over four long graduated drawers flanked by fluted engaged stiles, the molded waist over a rectangular case fitted with four long graduated drawers, on bracket feet - h:86 w:41 d:22 in.

Provenance: Inscribed “S.F. Smith, Newton Centre, Mass.”, in pencil on the top of the lower section. Samuel Francis Smith (1808-1895), author of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.” As a poet, author and minister, Smith was a prominent resident of Newton, Massachusetts
