The steamer Amazon was built for the Northwest Transportation Co. of Detroit in 1873. During its life, The Amazon transported freight and passengers between Chicago and Buffalo and was the largest steamer on the Great Lakes. She ran aground on a sandbar at Grand Haven, Oct. 28, 1879, and was rebuilt. The Amazon served the Detroit and Mackinac Railroad line.
