maker's mark at each side of handle at top of lid near handle and behind monogram on lid, interior of lid engraved with trowel and hammer and inscription under base '29oz 4 penw' and 'Maert 20 Ano 1729,' the large slightly tapering body with applied foliate band around base, scrolling thumbpiece and hollow handle terminating in a circular mask at base, the flattened raised central section of circular lid with central script monogram and maker's mark near handle, and scalloped section above pouring spout, 27.8 ozt

Philip Goelet (1701 or 1708-1748) was active as a silversmith in New York from about 1730 until his death in 1748.

The consignor is a descendant of George Lauder (cousin and business partner of Andrew Carnegie) and the James Patterson Scott family (Boston/Philadelphia).
