Catalogue note:
Born in Kessel, Germany, Andreas Achenbach began his painting career in 1827 when he enrolled in the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. There, he studied under acclaimed German Romantic painter Friedrich Wilhem Schadow. Influenced by extensive travel to Scandinavia and the Netherlands, Achenbach's work became less sentimental and more subdued. In his lifetime, he was renowned for his moody, yet intricate, seascapes and maritime scenes. Achenbach is considered to be a founding member of the Düsseldorf school, and was named an honorary citizen of Düsseldorf in 1885. His paintings can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Städel Museum (Frankfurt) and the National Gallery (Berlin), among others.
