Degree in Electric Communication Engineering, June 1924; 1914 San Antonio, Texas, high school diploma; B.S. from the U.S. Naval Academy; and his Radio Operator's License; Military: Louisiana appointment as aide-de-camp to Governor, 1954; 1915 appointment as midshipman, signed by Josephus Daniels; 1921 appointment to Lieutenant (junior grade); 1924 appointment to Lieutenant; 1943 appointment Rear Admiral; Certificate from National Aeronautics Association; 1922 appointment Lt. Commander in the Navy; 1918 appointment to ensign; 1939 appointment to Commander in the Navy; Colonel promotion for J.A. Settle; Awards: Meritorious Service, Louisiana Purchase Exposition; also included are 11 photographs, most large format, two from China, one dated 1946, two of hot air balloons, the remainder of the navy crews Settle served with.

Catalogue Note:
Vice Admiral Thomas G.W. Settle (1895-1980) was an officer in the United States Navy, an experienced balloonist, long-time flight instructor, and commanded the USS Portland in World War II. He is most known for setting a world altitude record in the Century of Progress stratospheric balloon in 1933.
