Description:

ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES WILLSON PEALE (AMERICAN, 1741-1827)
SELF PORTRAIT
Graphite on paper: 5 3/4 X 4 1/4 in.
Along with an autograph of Charles Willson Peale; " Errors Excepted C.W. Peale/ Jany 1825." Saint-Memin made a profile drawing of Charles Wilson Peale in 1807, now in a Private Collection. The drawing was made into an engraving the same year and is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG.74.39.157). This work could have been done around the same time as the St. Memin, 1807, however it is more likely to have been drawn sometime between 1821 and 1826. A period for Charles Willson Peale of re-emergence as a portrait painter and more especially a self-portraitist. There are numerous letters to quote from but perhaps the most interesting would be a letter dated March 1st, 1826, form Charles Willson to Rubens and Linnius "I have finished a picture from a print the size of St. Memins, and it is so good that I am proud of it .....my subject in writing today was on the merit of Portrait painting, and I do not know whether my treating on that subject has not created an enthusiasm to make me try to make a perfect elusion in a Portrait." Provenance: By descent in the Chase (Massachusetts) and Swope (Carlyle and Gettysburg, PA.) families.
