Catalogue Note: Born in France, Edouart began his career in 1807 at Saint-Yrieix-la Perche, where he ran a porcelain factory until 1809. In 1814, he moved to London to teach French and make jewelry; and there he began his career making silhouette portraits. Edouart published his treatise on the subject "l'Art de la Silhouette" in 1835. The artist lived in America from 1839 to 1849, and it was during this time he would have made the silhouette of General Alexander Macomb. Macomb was the Commanding General of the United States Army from 1828 until his death. Edouart returned to France in 1849 where he worked on smaller silhouettes including one of Victor Hugo.
