Catalogue note: Augustin Hanicotte was a French painter active in Paris, Volendam, and Collioure. Associated with the La Vache enragée artist group, he studied under Fernand Cormon at the École des Beaux-Arts and was influenced by Maurice Denis and the Nabis. His work was widely exhibited in Paris, Brussels, Tokyo, and North America, receiving praise from critics including Louis Vauxcelles and Apollinaire. Known for his luminous palette and monumental style, Hanicotte also received commissions from the Gobelins tapestry factory. His works are held in public collections such as the museums of Narbonne, Béthune, Valenciennes, and the Zuiderzee Museum.
