Catalogue note:
Avis Fleming has been an active artist in the Washington, D.C. area for over 50 years. Originally from New Orleans, Fleming studied art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn before moving to Alexandria, Virginia with her husband in the late 1960s. Fleming became a member of the Studio Gallery, currently the longest-running artist-owned gallery in Washington, D.C., and was influenced by the Washington color school movement. She began using acrylics to paint more rhythmic, geometric forms, described by the Washington D.C. Art Review as "lyrical abstractions." Fleming's work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, earning acclaim from critics. In a 1977 article for the Washington Post, Jo Ann Lewis praised Fleming's "tenderly drawn and delicately modulated colored squares and rectangles that are almost Klee-like in feeling" as some of her finest paintings to date. Fleming has continued to develop her style over the years, working with printmaking and ceramics in addition to painting and drawing. For over 30 years, she has taught at the Art League School at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria.

"Sunflowers" was selected by New York Times art critic Hilton Kramer for an art show at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, VA, shortly after Fleming painted it.
