Catalogue note:
Tom Sayers (1826-1865) was a British Bare-Knuckle prize fighter and a major figure in the history of boxing. In his career that spanned from 1849-1857, he lost only one fight to the American John Carmel Heenan. Sayers became a national hero and when he died at the age of 39 a huge crowd watched his cortege on its journey to London's Highgate Cemetery. Tom is depicted here at the age of 28 with Harry Brunton, who was his second.

  • Condition: This work has an old lining.
    There is minor separation of the lining in the top part of the canvas close to the frame.
    There are small areas of inpaint scattered around the painting.
