Description:

BRONZE FIGURE OF 'LE BUCHERON FABLE DE LA FONTAINE', AFTER LOUIS LEOPOLD CHAMBARD (1811-1895) together with attached fluted wood column with brass fittings, signed 'Chambard' on reverse;

Chambard studied painting and sculpture under Ingres and David d'Angers. He won the Prix de Rome in 1837 and a further medal in 1842. He exhibited at the Salon in Paris from 1841 to 1868.

Le Bucheron was inspired by the Greek classics. It was most likely cast from the original moulds shortly after Chambard's death around 1900 - h:34 in.
