Description:

BRONZE GROUP, 'DOLLARD DES ORMEAUX,' AFTER LOUIS-PHILIPPE HEBERT (1850-1917) Adam Dollard des Ormeaux (1635-1660) is an iconic figure in the history of Canada. At 23, he emigrated from France to “New France” and by 1658 was appointed the Commander of the Garrison at Ville-Marie (now Montreal). In the spring of 1660, he led a group of 17 young French men to the Ottawa River to attack the Iroquois. They were outnumbered, and he and all of his companions were killed at the Battle of Long Sault. Most historians agree that Dollard set out to conduct an ambush against the Iroquois in order to delay (or avoid altogether) their imminent attack on Ville-Marie. For these reasons, Dollard is regarded as a hero of New France.

Louis-Philippe Hebert was a Canadian sculptor who worked in bronze, wood and terracotta. He apprenticed in Paris and exhibited in the Salon des Artistes Francais de Paris for the Expositions Universelles, and received a bronze medal in 1889 and a silver medal in 1990. He was made a Chevalier of France’s Legion of Honor in 1901. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and was awarded the Medal of Confederation in 1894. The Prix Philippe-Hebert, named in his honor, has been given to an artist of outstanding ability and stature in Quebec since 1971, h: (to tip of sword) 36 x w: 19 x d: 12 in.
