Description:

BWA PLANK MASK, BURKINA FASO painted plank shaped with a circular face at one end and a crescent moon at the other. This mask is held up and the holder is covered with raffia to disguise and transform him into a supernatural being. Originally used used by the Do society at village dances to encourage a successful harvest. The painted geometric designs have symbolic meanings. The checkerboard pattern symbolizes the separation of light from dark, male/female, and good from evil. -
