Catalogue note:
Byron Browne was a founding member of American Abstract Artists, a group formed in New York in 1936 dedicated to the promotion of abstract art in the United States. Browne's style of "synthetic cubism" was influenced by his friends and peers, such as Milton Avery, Willem de Kooning and John Graham. Browne's paintings can be found in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York) and the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, D.C.), among others.
