CARL JOHAN FAHLCRANTZ
SWEDISH, 1774-1861
CLASSICAL LANDSCAPE
Oil on canvas
Verso pink auction label: 9 April 1991

Catalogue note:
Carl Johan Fahlcrantz has been called the "father of the Swedish landscape painting" and is considered the most emblematic of Sweden's romantic school painters. He arrived in Stockholm in the early 1790s. Among his teachers were the Swede, Emanuel Limnell; Louis Belanger, who came from France to Stockholm in 1798; and Elias Martin, who returned to Sweden after a study tour in England. Fahlcrantz became a member of the Academy of Arts in Stockholm in 1803 and a professor in 1815. He became an honorary member of several foreign academies, as in Copenhagen, New York and Philadelphia. He received orders from the Swedish royal family, as well as Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. Fahlcrantz is known for his veduta paintings and he composed romantic landscapes of forests, mountains, and waterfalls, not infrequently in the evocative morning and evening lighting (Source: Malmö Art Museum online).
