CHARLESTON, S.C. MIDDLETON AND DEAS FAMILIES' ESTATE DOCUMENT Dated 5th July 1785. Reading at the top 'Estate of Thomas Middleton, Esq. / To Estate of David Deas.' A recording of the expenses of the household of Elizabeth Deas Middleton, daughter of David Deas and second wife of Thomas Middleton. Thomas was a member of the Crowfield Plantation family, and a cousin to Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He inherited property from David Deas on behalf of his wife Elizabeth, which then passed to her on his death in 1779. Both Thomas Middleton and David Deas were plantation owners in the Georgetown region of South Carolina with multiple plantations along the Santee River. Both were also probably involved in the slave trade. This document records the purchase or sale of 'Negroes at Santee' on Dec. 15, 1777. h:12.50 w: 15.75 in.
