Description:

CHINESE EXPORT FOR THE AMERICAN MARKET POT-DE-CREME FROM THE SERVICE OF PHILADELPHIAN SAMUEL BRECK, JR., CIRCA 1800
the pot-de-creme with a twist handle, decorated with a gilt star with the initials S.J.B; together with a similar decorated small octagonal bowl (diameter: 6 inches), but with a flower cornucopia, likely made for a Philadelphia Family, circa 1800 (2)

Note:
Samuel Breck, Jr. (1771-1862) was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Samuel Breck and Hannah Andrews, a wealthy merchant in Boston. In 1787 he returned from studies in France and began work in a Boston counting house. In 1791 he went into business for himself, and in 1792 moved to Philadelphia where he continued in his mercantile career and invested in the ship "Empress of China." He served in the Pennsylvania State Senate and the United States House of Representatives from 1823 to 1825.

Another example of a similarly decorated bowl, possibly for the Craigie family, sold at Brunk Auction, July 15, 2023, Lot 843, and had previously sold there, November 11, 2012, Lot 1235, from the Alice L. Patrick, Charleston, South Carolina.

  • Provenance: Marian Burros Estate
  • Condition: Cover missing, both with light wear to gilt, bowl with small chip to rim
