Catalogue note: Edward Friström was born in Torhamn, Sweden; he was known for his landscape paintings and modern impressionistic style. He spent time in Australia and New Zealand, where he established himself as a painter and teacher. Friström's work reflected elements of impressionism and avant-garde techniques, contributing to the local art scene while also embracing international modernism. In 1915 Edward immigrated to California and resided in the San Francisco Bay Area. Later, he moved to Monterey and then Carmel-by-the Sea, where he had a home and studio. Between 1927 and 1936 he was a frequent and popular exhibitor at the Carmel Art Association, where his seascapes and landscapes received much acclaim.
