    According to family tradition of the owner, the cradle belonged to Martha Parke "Patty" Custis (1777-1854), the granddaughter of Martha Dandridge Custis, who married George Washington in 1759. Patty Custis married Thomas Peter and lived at Tudor Place in Washington, D.C., [Thomas Peter was one of the executors of Martha Washington's estate along with her grandson, George Washington Parke Custis];
    to Patty's sister-in-law, Elizabeth Peter (1771-1837), who married James Dunlop of Hayes Manor in Montgomery County, Maryland;
    to their son, Col. Henry Dunlop (1799-1877);
    by descent to the present owner
