Catalogue Note:
This piece comes with several articles of documentation from the early 20th Century that states the compass was given, in 1795, by Daniel Boone to Abraham Kirkendal Miller, and was given by him to James Mullen, who willed it to Claude E. Hensley of Oklahoma City. Miller grew up in Bourbon County, Kentucky, along the Kentucky-Indiana border, and the newspaper article with the piece notes that Boone stopped at the Miller homestead frequently and the young Miller accompanied him on hunting trips, learning to hunt and shoot. After "shooting a large panther", Boone was impressed with the boy's courage that he gave him the compass and a 'sunglass,' so the newspaper states. The article further notes that he was a well known marksman, and in 1811 served as an Indian scout during the Battle of Tippecanoe. Historical records do show a 'Sergeant Abraham Miller' serving in a company with General William Henry Harrison at the Battle.
