Description:

DONALD (LEPORINI) DIMAURO SET OF EIGHT BLACK WALNUT DINING CHAIRS eight handcrafted black walnut dining chairs, including two arm chairs crafted and signed by Donald (Leporini) DiMauro of Foxborough Massachusetts between 1981 and 1983 and acquired by the consignor directly from DiMauro. The chairs feature upholstered seats set within the sculptural walnut frames, a slat back, and angled rear legs. The original invoice price for the eight chairs and extension table (en suite) in 1981 was $6,875.00. The pieces are signed "Donald Leporini" who later went by Donald (Leporini) DiMauro. Donald (Leporini) DiMauro (American, 20th/21st Century) is a 2015 Nominee to Martha Stewart's American Made Contest to "highlight the maker, support the local, and celebrate the handmade", with winners to be announced in October 2015. In his profile on the Martha Stewart website (http://www.marthastewart.com/americanmade/nominee/92551/design/craftsmanlife-donald-dimauro-woodworker) DiMauro describes his background and aesthetic philosophy in depth, stating in part "Individuals, deeds, and words inspire me. When I began woodworking my father was the only man I knew who made things for a living. He taught me to see differently, to take pride in making, to respect human effort, and to learn to visualize. It was not long before I recognized the rich tradition of furniture making and realized that I was not alone. I saw George Nakashima's work harmonize the union between Man and Nature and Sam Maloof's will to persevere and influence with his subtle detail and classic designs. There was "Lu Pan, A Carpenter's Apprentice", the book I read to my children about a boy's desire to study under a true master, pass the tests of initiation and prove he had the courage required to become a master craftsman. Boston museum curator Jonathan Fairbanks extolled craft and organized major exhibitions, and John Ruskin wrote, 'When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece.' This group and others, by words and actions, set the standard for me." In regard to his status as an American studio furniture craftsman, DiMauro declares "Ingenuity, pragmatism and boldness represent the best of America and ought to show in all things American made. Early in our history we borrowed from others to forge our own tradition. Now through our collective eccentricities, needs and resources we've created a style that we can call American. Furniture design includes wide ranges in quality and cost. This element of choice belongs to our culture. We have to innovate and examine many ideas and solutions to decide what works best or what looks right. Though some may consider my work expensive, offering this choice to those who want and can discern quality in materials, careful workmanship, and design that elevates the dignity and beauty of ordinary household objects helps to reinforce our democratic ideals. To always work to the best of our abilities, to respect and use our resources in new and clever ways, to avoid tawdry styles, and to make things that will last; these are strong American values that determine American made."
