Catalogue note: This drawing is by Dorothy Hepworth, the companion of Patricia Preece (Lady Spencer), who was the second wife of the British artist Stanley Spencer. Hepworth and Preece met while studying under Roger Fry at the Slade School in 1917, later worked together in Paris with André Lhôte, and lived much of their lives together at Moor Thatch in Cookham. Hepworth, an accomplished portraitist and miniaturist, often exhibited her work under Preece's name, and their paintings were shown at the Reid and Lefevre Gallery in 1936 and the Leger Galleries in 1938, with introductions by Duncan Grant and Clive Bell.
