Catalogue note: Dorothy Lake Gregory was born in Brooklyn and showed artistic talent early in life. Following a trip to Europe and an introduction to modern art, she enrolled at the Pratt Institute in New York and studied at the Art Students League under the artist Robert Henri. At the urging of a fellow student, Gregory went to Provincetown, Massachusetts to study at Charles Hawthorne's painting school. Her art expressed a tremendous range of styles and mediums. Gregory exhibited at many prestigious venues, including the National Academy of Design, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Collections: Museum of Fine Art, Boston; Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.
