Dwight William Tryon studied at the Académie Julian in Paris and was deeply influenced by the tonal landscapes of the Barbizon School. Upon his return to the United States, he became one of the leading figures in American Tonalism, celebrated for his serene, meditative landscapes that evoke quietude and subtle shifts in light. Tryon served as the first professor of art at Smith College and also held a prominent role as the artist-in-residence at the American Academy in Rome. His refined, atmospheric compositions often depict dawn or twilight and reflect a deep reverence for nature.
