Catalogue note: Edward Loyal Field was an American artist renowned for his rural landscapes executed in various mediums including: graphite, pen and ink, watercolor, and oil. Field was born in Galesburg, Illinois. He attended Cornell University from 1874 to 1878, before moving to Paris, where he studied at the Académie Julian from 1878 to 1879 under the French painter Carolus Duran. Duran's influence was significant in the development of Field's artistic painterly style. The artist exhibited his work at numerous important venues such as the Salmagundi Club, National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Chicago Art Institute. Throughout his career Field moved to various locations, residing in Paris from 1879 to 1882; New York from 1885 to 1900; Delaware from 1900 to 1905; and New York from 1905 to 1914.
